fficials said these restaurants and guest houses had become a ‘front for illegal sex trade’.
Plainclothes cops searched Gongabu-based guest houses leading to the arrest of nine people including their owners. Of the arrested, seven are women aged 17 to 20.
With this, police said as many as 139 people were arrested in the course of raids since the crackdown on alleged ‘sex trade’ began one week ago.
DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh, spokesperson, Kathmandu Police, claimed that the crackdown followed complaints from local residents that several restaurants and guest houses were engaged in illicit activities under the cloak of business entrepreneurship. “Such activities are against the law and are punishable,” he warned.
Police also claimed they rounded up several unmarried couples in compromising position during the raid.
Police said charges were filed against 30 restaurant and guest house owners so far though the women and girls were released on the condition that they would quit the profession. According to officials, the raids were carried out in 128 places. Hoteliers, however, have alleged that all the arrested were innocent and police had arrested employees and employers to snatch their livelihood.
